History

The Van Niekerk family has lived on the farm, Klipkoppies since the late 1870’s.  Albert and Elize are the fourth Van Niekerk generation and have been farming on Klipkoppies since 1953. They are assisted by their daughter Elma Carr and one of their twin sons, Rudo. Elma is responsible for the administration and Rudo keeps record of the stud-animals. He is also one of the judges of the Dorper Sheep Breeders’ Society of SA (SADBS).

 In January 2007, Willem Kotze was employed as the farm manager.

Klipkoppies Dorper stud has:

  • Successfully held 48 production auctions.
  • Selected more than 13,000 animals as stud and type 5.
  • More than 1000 type 5 breeding ewes on a Dorper 21 program since 1999.
  • Lamb percentage of + 150% per year.
  • Done performance testing since 1978.
  • Done performance testing on all breeding rams on all farms since 1990 and have been phenotypically inspected by an inspector of the SADBS.
  • During the 45th production auction, 41% of the ewes were twins. Blup values were available.


Our Aim

Farming at Klipkoppies is extensive. Ewes lamb on the veld and no supplementary feeding is given. Animals are sometimes rounded off for marketing.

Klipkoppies Dorper Stud strives to breed the most economically, adaptable Dorpers under natural grazing conditions.

Our animals move easily, are hardy, adaptable and very fertile with an excellent carcass quality and -taste. Quality carcasses are produced between  3½ to 4½ months. Grade: +90% as SA1,SA2 and SA3.
